Seelisberg Tunnel returns to normal operations after fatal accident
The Seelisberg Tunnel in Switzerland has returned to normal operations following extensive repairs triggered by a fatal accident on August 14. The accident occurred near the southern portal when a vehicle crashed through the gate of the southern control center, causing a fire that destroyed much of the facility's equipment and severed the power supply.
For approximately six weeks, the tunnel operated under a 60 km/h speed limit due to the use of emergency lighting and a provisional power supply via a diesel generator. Repairs involved drying out damaged transformers, replacing cable systems and radio cables, and conducting rigorous testing to ensure the infrastructure could handle full operational loads.
With the completion of these repairs and the restoration of the regular power supply, the speed limit has been raised back to 100 km/h. Further maintenance work on the control center will continue without impacting traffic.
