SEFH Congress addresses challenges in advanced therapies

At the 71st National Congress of the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy (SEFH) in Gran Canaria, experts discussed the regulatory, scientific, and organizational challenges surrounding advanced therapies. Participants emphasized that these treatments have transitioned from future prospects to clinical realities, necessitating updated models for regulation, manufacturing, financing, and patient monitoring.

Key discussions focused on the need to simplify outcome-based financing agreements and the importance of utilizing homogeneous data to drive clinical decisions. Elena Gras, Director General of Pharmacy for the Generalitat Valenciana, highlighted current difficulties in responding to the clinical and economic uncertainties of these medicines. She advocated for agreements that are both useful for resolving uncertainties and viable for organizations to measure, noting that similar medications should ideally have similar agreements to ensure consistency in follow-up and data collection.
