Sefwi Wiawso maternity block nears completion after 14-year delay
Construction has resumed on a 25-bed maternity block at the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Hospital in Ghana’s Western North Region. The project had been abandoned since 2013, remaining untouched for approximately 14 years.
The Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly took over the project as part of a broader initiative to complete stalled development works within the municipality. During an inspection of ongoing projects, Western North Regional Minister Wilbert Petty Brentum described the facility as a “state-of-the-art maternity block” that is “very fit for purpose,” suggesting it could potentially serve as a regional maternity center.
The new facility is intended to alleviate significant pressure on the hospital’s current maternity unit, which operates with only nine beds. Nurse manager Vera Esson Nyarko noted that the existing capacity is “woefully inadequate” for the number of pregnant women seeking delivery services at the hospital. The expansion is expected to improve patient comfort and increase the facility's capacity to serve the community.
