SEGA manages chaos on official Sonic the Hedgehog Discord server

SEGA’s official Sonic the Hedgehog Discord server, launched to promote ‘Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’, experienced immediate chaos following its release on October 5. Within hours of its creation, the server was flooded with inappropriate messages, memes, and controversial fan content, prompting moderators to temporarily lock down the community.

Aaron Webber, SEGA’s Director of Strategy, Studio, and Community Relations, addressed the situation, describing the launch as “pretty wild” but noting that the server had since become more “wholesome.” Webber explained that strict automatic filters were used to swiftly remove bad actors, though he acknowledged these filters may have been too aggressive, leading to some accidental bans of legitimate users.

In response to the incident, SEGA has modified the server rules. New restrictions prohibit AI-generated content, including AI-generated dating simulators featuring the character Dr. Eggman, though human-made versions remain permitted. The company is currently working to tweak moderation filters and unban incorrectly flagged accounts to restore the community as intended.
