SEGA outlines future strategy for Sonic the Hedgehog 35th anniversary

As the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise celebrates its 35th anniversary, SEGA executives have outlined the future direction of the series. Executive Producer Takashi Iizuka and Creative Director Kazuyuki Hoshino discussed the franchise's evolution from its origins as a side-scrolling platformer to its expansion into 3D with the Adventure series.

Iizuka stated that SEGA intends to continue evolving the franchise through three primary pillars: Classic 2D Sonic, Modern 3D Sonic, and racing games via the Sonic Racing sub-series. He noted that experimenting with new ideas could lead to unique gaming experiences, leaving the door open for diverse future proposals. Recent developments include the announcement of the Classic Sonic Collection and Modern Sonic Collection.
