Sega President Shuji Utsumi Says Company Won’t Drop Physical Game Discs Amid Sony’s Digital Shift

Sony has announced that it will stop producing physical PlayStation game discs from 2028, sparking industry debate over the future of physical media. In a Famitsu interview, Sega president Shuji Utsumi said digital distribution is essential for the company’s growth, especially as the PC gaming audience expands worldwide. He emphasized that Sega will continue to support physical releases, describing the disc format as part of the company’s cultural heritage and stating that Sega will pursue a “dual‑track” strategy that balances digital sales with ongoing physical production.

Utsumi also noted that Sega is reviving classic franchises such as Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, and Shinobi, with new titles slated for release from 2027 onward. The company aims to appeal to both long‑time fans and new players while strengthening its global digital presence, without abandoning the traditional box‑based market.
