Sega targets new demographics for Sonic the Hedgehog's 35th anniversary

As the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise celebrates its 35th anniversary, Sega is looking to expand the brand's reach by targeting new demographics, including female fans and growing markets in Asia. Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, stated that the franchise has only reached about half of its full potential. He noted that the long-term vision for the brand includes ambitious goals such as surpassing Disney and potentially building a theme park.

Creative Director Kazuyuki Hoshino highlighted the franchise's unexpected popularity in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, noting that younger fans in those regions often discover the character through the film series.

Additionally, Iizuka discussed the evolution of the character Shadow the Hedgehog. While Shadow was originally intended to die permanently at the end of Sonic Adventure 2, his immense popularity led the team to revive him in Sonic Heroes. Iizuka noted that Shadow's popularity is now approaching the level of Sonic's, especially following the release of the third film, and expressed a desire to give the character more opportunities to shine in future projects.
