Sega's Sonic Team promises new surprises for 35th anniversary

Sega’s Sonic Team director Takashi Iizuka confirmed that the franchise will continue to unveil new content as it marks its 35th anniversary in 2026. While recent releases such as Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, the Classic Sonic Collection and the Modern Sonic Collection have already been announced, Iizuka said additional surprises remain under wraps and may be revealed at upcoming events like Gamescom, the Tokyo Game Show and The Game Awards.

Iizuka also explained the challenges of creating a remake, noting that updating classic titles involves revisiting controls, level design, technology and presentation, often requiring as much effort as a brand‑new game. He emphasized that fan feedback guides the team, but the priority remains delivering fresh Sonic experiences alongside respectful remasters.
