Segovia giants discovered to date back to 1697 during restoration

Restoration efforts by the Reus-based workshop Avall Patrimoni Viu have revealed that the “gigantillas” of Segovia may be among the oldest giants in Spain. While previously documented as dating back to 1920, restorers discovered that the internal structures and materials did not align with that era.

Following an investigation, researchers determined that the heads of the figures are original pieces from 1697. This conclusion was supported by a detailed construction contract and physical evidence, such as antique paper aging and specific stamps found on the cardboard.

The restoration project, commissioned by the Segovia City Council and the local giants and big-heads association, involved seven figures: the Mayor and Mayoress, an African couple, a Roman couple, and an Inca. The figures had not undergone significant intervention since 1995 and were in a state of deterioration.
