Segovia mayor José Mazarías rejects waste‑tax cut as council votes to keep higher rates

The municipal government of Segovia, led by mayor José Mazarías of the PP, voted against a proposal from the socialist group to lower the municipal waste‑tax by 20%. The motion, backed by Segovia en Marcha, IU and Ciudadanos, was defeated after PP members voted no and VOX abstained, leaving in place a rate that has risen roughly 40% in the past two years. The PSOE argued that the city collected about €6.3 million in waste fees in 2025 while the actual service cost was under €5 million, indicating an over‑collection of roughly €1.3 million that could be used to ease the burden on families.

In the neighbouring Ribera inter‑municipal waste‑management authority, opposition parties are demanding that the body return waste‑taxes that were charged twice to self‑employed individuals after a reform enacted in November. Mayor Tirso Calvo of Ribaforada explained that the new model can impose separate charges on property owners who also run a business, harming small businesses and non‑profit entities. The socialist spokesperson called the double‑charging “unjust” and urged a correction of the system.
