Segun Odegbami calls for suspension of NFF elections

Former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami has called for a suspension of the upcoming Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) elections, citing deep-seated structural flaws in the administration. Odegbami argues that the current electoral framework is tilted toward an established political system, making it difficult for outsiders to compete fairly.

Odegbami noted that the NFF elections have become a "four-yearly ritual of crisis" and claimed that the administration has failed to match the talent and economic potential of Nigerian football. He expressed concern that decisions made since the early 1990s have created a self-sustaining system that benefits current administrators, thereby stunting the growth of the industry.

The NFF 2026 Executive Committee elections are scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, following a one-day postponement to accommodate the Super Eagles' Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar. Odegbami has indicated his intention to take the matter to the Nigerian civil courts to attempt to reset the administration.
