Segway technology fuels global e-scooter boom

Dean Kamen’s Segway, originally unveiled in 2001 as a revolutionary personal transporter, has become the technological foundation for today’s micromobility ecosystem. While the original device struggled with sales and high‑profile crashes, its self‑balancing gyroscope and compact form factor inspired the design of shareable electric scooters now deployed in dozens of countries. Micromobility experts note that brands such as Lime, Spin and Veo have built on Segway’s concepts to create fleets that complement other urban transport options like e‑bikes and car‑sharing services. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that more than 199 e‑scooter systems operate across 133 U.S. cities, underscoring the sector’s rapid expansion. Former Biden administration official and Adapt/Impact LLC founder Gabe Klein highlighted that the Segway “gave people a sense of what small, donating electric vehicles could achieve,” linking the invention to the broader shift toward human‑scale electric mobility.
