Sei Whale Dies After Failed Rescue in Argentina's Río de la Plata
A seven‑meter‑long sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) became stranded on a sandbank in the Río de la Plata near the suburb of San Fernando, just north of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The animal’s full weight rested on its belly, threatening organ function. Rescue teams from the conservation group Fundación Temaikén and the Argentine Naval Prefecture worked for more than a day, keeping the whale’s skin wet and planning to use the rising tide to move it into deeper water.
Despite the effort, the whale’s condition remained critical and it died. The foundation announced, “Leider hat das Tier trotz aller Bemühungen nicht überlebt,” and officials warned that the combination of environmental factors or a health problem likely caused the disorientation that led to the stranding.
