Seinäjoki illegal mop race leaves two teens injured

On the evening of 1 August 2026, hundreds of youths gathered for an illegal mop race on Seinäjoki’s Trukkiväylä. A teenage rider of a light motorbike lost control, fell from the vehicle and the bike continued into oncoming traffic, colliding with a teenage moped rider. The moped rider sustained serious, non‑life‑threatening injuries, while the motorbike rider was lightly injured.

Police are investigating the motorbike rider for a severe traffic‑safety violation and a serious injury offence, and have imposed a driving ban. The Pohjanmaa police department warned that such unregistered mop races are illegal under assembly‑law provisions and stressed the organiser’s duty to ensure safety and notify authorities. The incident follows reports of other illegal mop gatherings across the region, all of which avoided major casualties this weekend.
