South American seismic activity: Colombia earthquake triggers regional concern

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia near San José del Palmar, Chocó, marking the strongest seismic event in the country in a decade. The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 100 kilometers, a characteristic of subduction where the Nazca Plate slides beneath the South American Plate. The event caused significant damage, including building collapses in cities like Cali, Pereira, and Manizales, and resulted in over 130 fatalities and thousands of injuries.

Geologists have clarified that the Colombian earthquake is not directly linked to recent seismic activity in Venezuela. While both involve the South American Plate, the Venezuelan events were shallower (around 10 kilometers) and driven by different tectonic mechanisms involving the Caribbean Plate. Experts emphasize that while the region remains highly active due to the Pacific Ring of Fire, one country's earthquake does not scientifically predict an immediate event in a neighboring nation.

In Argentina, authorities and geologists are monitoring potential risks. While the country is not on a major plate collision boundary, regions such as Mendoza and San Juan face high seismic danger due to the ongoing interaction between the Nazca and South American plates. Experts stress that earthquake prediction remains impossible and advocate for seismic-resistant construction as the primary method for protecting lives in high-risk zones.
