Seismic activity reported in Huancavelica, Peru and Granada, Spain

Multiple regions are experiencing significant seismic activity. In Peru, the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) reported a 4.0 magnitude earthquake on July 17, 2026, located 29 km northeast of Castrovirreyna in the Huancavelica region, at a depth of 95 km. The IGP has urged authorities and citizens to implement preventive strategies to prepare for potential high-intensity tremors.

In Spain, the Granada metropolitan area has recorded nearly one thousand tremors in a single week following a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in Alhendín. While most tremors were below 1.5 magnitude, approximately one hundred were felt by the population. A series of earthquakes in the Vega de Granada, including a 4.8 magnitude event in Gójar, has caused significant disruption. The Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (CCS) has received over 12,500 indemnity claims, with estimated losses reaching 35 million euros. The seismic activity has forced the evacuation of social service centers and hundreds of residents in Las Gabias.
