Seismic activity reported in southern Germany

Recent seismic activity has been recorded in southern Germany, specifically in the states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

In Baden-Württemberg, the region remains one of the most seismically active in Germany. Key hotspots include the Swabian Jura/Zollernalb district and the Lörrach area, where tremors can occasionally cause structural damage. In early 2026, the Lörrach district recorded eight earthquakes, though most remained below a magnitude of 1.8 ML. A minor 0.7 magnitude tremor was also recently detected near Lake Constance.

In Bavaria, a tremor measuring between 1.7 and 1.8 magnitude occurred near Bad Reichenhall at the Hochstaufen site. The epicenter was located at a shallow depth of less than three kilometers. While the earthquake was not strong enough to cause structural collapses, witnesses reported hearing a loud, dull bang and feeling floor vibrations. Researchers from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München noted that Bavaria experiences frequent local tremors, with approximately 1,800 recorded in 2025 and 700 so far in 2026.
