Seismic activity rises in Chiapas as Guatemala faces heavy storms

Seismic activity in Chiapas, Mexico, has seen a significant increase during the first half of 2026. According to specialist Dr. Avith Mendoza Ponce, 3,326 earthquakes were recorded between January and June, nearly doubling the figures from the same period in 2025. While the frequency has risen, magnitudes remained moderate, ranging from 1 to 4.9, with an average of 3.1. The activity is attributed to the Chichón volcano, subduction processes on the coast, and various fault systems.

In Guatemala, the National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) has reported heavy rainfall, winds, and electrical activity due to an East Wave interacting with high temperatures. The weather has caused hail in Santa Rosa and flooding in urban areas of Escuintla. Authorities have issued warnings regarding potential river rises, landslides, and road damage, advising citizens to avoid crossing flooded areas and seek shelter during storms.
