Seismic risk warnings issued for Peru and Spain

A potential magnitude 8.8 event could devastate regions between Ica and Lima, specifically Pisco and Huacho. Projections from Indeci suggest such an event could result in 50,000 deaths and 2.1 million displaced persons, exacerbated by widespread self-built housing lacking proper structural engineering.

In Spain, specialists express concern over a loss of collective memory regarding geological risks. While the country has not experienced a major earthquake in the 20th century, experts from the Red Sísmica Nacional and various universities warn that historical precedents, such as the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and the 1522 Almería earthquake, prove the inevitability of significant seismic activity. Experts emphasize that both authorities and citizens are currently underprepared for a major event.
