Seismic risk in Northern Brazil remains low, experts say
The risk of high-intensity earthquakes causing significant damage in Northern Brazil is considered low, according to Marcos Ferreira, a geophysicist from the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB). While seismic activity is recorded in the region, major events are typically located at great depths or in distant areas, which reduces their impact on the surface.
Residents in Amazonian cities such as Belém, Manaus, and Rio Branco may feel tremors caused by earthquakes in neighboring countries with high seismic activity, such as Colombia and Venezuela. However, seismic waves lose much of their energy as they travel long distances, making significant damage unlikely.
Within Brazilian territory, the most significant seismic events are concentrated in the state of Acre. These are linked to the subduction process where the Nazca Plate dives beneath the South American Plate, allowing for higher magnitude events in that specific area.
