Seismic risk preparedness emphasized in Colombia and Argentina

Authorities in Colombia and Argentina are emphasizing the importance of seismic risk preparedness through different institutional lenses.

In Colombia, the Procuraduría General de la Nación has called on governors and mayors to strengthen prevention measures against seismic risks. The agency requested the identification of vulnerable infrastructure and the verification of compliance with earthquake-resistant construction standards. Priority will be given to essential services, including hospitals, schools, fire stations, water and sanitation systems, energy networks, and strategic bridges. Local authorities must report on their progress and resource allocation via a national monitoring matrix.

In San Juan, Argentina, experts from the Department of Seismological Investigations (INPRES) are highlighting the gap between structural preparedness and individual readiness. Geologist Irene Pérez noted that while cities may have earthquake-resistant buildings and protocols, citizens must also be personally prepared. She emphasized the need for families to know evacuation routes, identify safe spots within homes, and maintain resources to survive the first 72 hours following a major event. Pérez also stressed the importance of regular drills beyond school settings.
