Seismologist predicts further major earthquakes through 2026
Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos states that global seismic activity remains within normal statistical levels, despite recent high-impact events. He predicts that three to four more earthquakes with a magnitude exceeding 7.0 Richter are statistically expected by the end of 2026.
According to Papadopoulos, the world typically experiences 15 to 17 such earthquakes annually, most occurring within the Pacific Ring of Fire. He notes that while 12 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have already been recorded in 2026—including events in Malaysia, Tonga, Vanuatu, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Venezuela, Mexico, and Colombia—the current frequency does not indicate an overall increase in global seismicity, but rather the destructive nature of specific recent events.
Separately, Panama continues to face significant seismic activity following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake on October 9. A recent 6.0 magnitude tremor occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers. The initial disaster caused extensive damage to approximately 900 homes and 14 bridges, particularly in the provinces of Veraguas and Los Santos, and resulted in at least 27 injuries. The Panamanian government has declared a state of emergency, allocating up to $100 million for recovery, with $5 million in additional aid provided by the United States.
