SEIU Local 1000 authorizes strike for California state workers
SEIU Local 1000, California’s largest state worker union representing approximately 100,000 public employees, has overwhelmingly authorized a strike. Following a vote where 96% of members favored walking out, the union is seeking improved pay, more affordable healthcare, and increased remote work flexibility.
The union’s contract expired on July 1. Members are pushing for higher raises and better benefits, citing a $20 billion increase in the state’s general fund spending over the last two years. The union previously filed a complaint with the state’s Public Employment Relations Board, alleging that CalHR engaged in bad faith bargaining and delayed negotiations. In September, the board concluded that CalHR “refused to meet and confer in good faith.”
In response, CalHR stated it remains open to negotiation and is prepared to enter mediation to reach an agreement. While a strike would be unprecedented in the union’s 44-year history, the specific timing and duration of a potential walkout remain undetermined.
