Sejm extraordinary commission to resume work on abortion law projects
The Polish Sejm's extraordinary commission on abortion rights is set to resume work on Thursday at 9:00 AM. Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty announced the meeting, stating that the fight for women's rights must continue.
The commission will consider two primary legislative proposals. The first is a joint project by the Lewica and Civic Coalition (KO) aimed at the partial decriminalization of abortion, including decriminalizing assistance in self-managed abortions. The second is a proposal from the Third Way (PSL and Poland 2050) intended to reverse the 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling by restoring the legality of abortion in cases of severe and irreversible fetal defects.
The resumption of these legislative efforts follows a period of inactivity lasting over two years. Reports suggest the decision to unblock the commission follows discussions between Marshal Czarzasty and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, amid political pressure from the Lewica party regarding the handling of reproductive rights legislation.
