Seknovene: Bulgarian traditions and religious observance on August 29

August 29 marks the religious and folk holiday of Seknovene in Bulgaria, commemorating the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist. According to Orthodox tradition, the saint was executed by beheading at the request of Herodias, following his condemnation of her marriage to Herod Antipas.

In Bulgarian folklore, the day is associated with significant natural and symbolic shifts. It is believed that on this day, day and night become equal in duration, marking the transition toward colder weather. Traditional beliefs suggest that water in rivers and springs becomes too cold for bathing, and various creatures, including snakes and lizards, begin their migration to winter shelters.

Due to the solemnity and perceived bad luck associated with the event, several folk prohibitions exist. It is traditionally advised against starting new endeavors, performing work involving cutting or wounds, or consuming red fruits, vegetables, and wine.
