Sekou Gassama explains departure from Universitario
Sekou Gassama has addressed his departure from the Peruvian club Universitario de Deportes. The Spanish-Senegalese striker explained that his lack of physical rhythm, caused by six months of inactivity due to family issues prior to his arrival, hindered his performance.
Gassama noted that his situation was complicated by coaching changes. He was originally signed at the request of coach Javier Rabanal, but lost playing time following Rabanal's departure. During the interim period under Jorge Araujo, he struggled to find continuity, and a muscle injury in March further impacted his availability. Although he saw some competitive minutes under Héctor Cúper, he ultimately rescinded his contract on June 10 to allow the club to free up a foreign player slot for the Clausura Tournament.
During his tenure, Gassama appeared in seven official matches without recording goals or assists. Despite being currently without a club, he stated he remains motivated to find a new team, noting that his previous experiences in Spain, Algeria, Cyprus, and Peru have left him financially stable.
