Selahattin Demirtaş seeks high-level state roles in Ankara

Cemalettin Kani Torun, an independent Member of Parliament who recently left the Future Party, has revealed details regarding his meetings with Selahattin Demirtaş, the former co-chair of the HDP currently detained in Edirne Prison.

Torun stated that during their discussions, Demirtaş expressed a desire to take on roles within the state apparatus in Ankara, noting, ‘I want to take on a duty in Ankara. Whatever the highest duties of the state are, that is my goal now.’ Torun emphasized that Demirtaş believes Kurdish politics should become an integrated part of Ankara’s political landscape.

Torun further commented on the political legitimacy of Demirtaş, suggesting he is the figure best positioned to communicate the vision of a ‘Democratic Republic’ to Turkish society. He also addressed perceived tensions between Demirtaş and Abdullah Öcalan, dismissing them as constructs promoted by opposition circles that serve no benefit to Kurdish politics.
