Selangor and Kuala Lumpur partner to mitigate flood risks

The Federal Government and the Selangor State Government have agreed on five immediate measures to mitigate flood risks in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The collaboration aims to manage water drainage flowing from Hulu Selangor through the capital to southern areas.

The agreed actions include:

• Coordinating drainage management from Hulu Selangor through Kuala Lumpur and southern regions, starting with technical meetings within two weeks to detail project scope and costs. • Conducting capacity studies on the Batu and Klang Gate dams to assess water management needs for the next 20 to 30 years. • Identifying and constructing new flood retention ponds in upstream areas and upgrading three existing ponds: Kampung Laksamana, Sungai Kertas, and Bukit Lagong. • Coordinating river dredging, silt management, and the selection of suitable disposal sites.

Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that the agreement covers land management, storage capacity, green spaces, sustainable urban development, and water flow. The initiative is considered urgent given that the combined population of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur accounts for a significant portion of Malaysia's economy.
