Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari says locals shield illegal Rohingya migrants

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari told the state assembly that a network of local residents is protecting undocumented foreign nationals, including Rohingya refugees, which hampers law‑enforcement actions. He described the phenomenon as a “tali barut” – a local element that buys and sells goods to the migrants, rents out land or premises, and even helps them evade fines. Amirudin said the UNHCR‑issued cards confirm the Rohingya’s refugee status but do not grant them the right to work, own assets or conduct business, and that the federal and state governments have not issued any such licences. He cited a district‑office record of 9,515 Rohingya individuals in Hulu Langat. The chief minister warned that enforcement must also target complicit locals, noting measures such as demolishing illegal structures and restoring land to its original status.
