Selangor implements strict controls on live pig imports from Sarawak

The Selangor state government has implemented strict import licenses and control procedures for live pig livestock arriving from Sarawak via Port Klang. This policy, which has been in effect since July 2025, aims to stabilize market supply and prices following industry disruptions caused by African Swine Fever (ASF).

According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Chan Foong Hin, the livestock must be transported directly to slaughterhouses in Rawang to ensure controlled handling. Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Exco Datuk Ir Izham Hashim noted that import licenses have been approved for approximately 800 animals per week under these specific conditions.

While the government maintains that the process follows strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), some groups, including Grass Malaysia, have called for greater transparency regarding the number of imports, the identities of importers, and the specific destinations of the livestock. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari indicated that the state may serve as an entry point to meet the needs of other states.
