Selangor State Assembly debates racial politics and development

During the debate on the Selangor Second Plan (RS-2) at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, political tensions surfaced regarding racial narratives and state development.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali urged Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to remain calm amidst political speculation regarding new party alignments. Azmin expressed support for Amirudin’s development agenda, emphasizing that Selangor should focus on unity and progress rather than political or racial division. He criticized groups that use the guise of Malay unity to justify kleptocracy and warned against political narratives that divide the Malay community.

Separately, assembly member Preakas Sampunathan (PH-Kota Kemuning) sparked debate by citing remarks made by Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor regarding the status of Chinese and Indian citizens in Malaysia. Sampunathan argued that identity-based political narratives should be rejected as they promote hatred and discrimination. The debate also touched upon the need for equitable economic growth across Selangor, with Azmin calling for development to reach areas like Tanjong Karang and Kuala Selangor rather than being concentrated solely in Petaling Jaya and Subang.
