Selargius authorities seize illegal hazardous waste site

Authorities in Selargius have seized a large area used for the illegal accumulation of special and hazardous waste. During an operation conducted by the Carabinieri, investigators discovered significant quantities of end-of-life vehicles, spare parts, and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) deposited on unsealed ground.

A couple is under investigation for managing the site without environmental authorizations. Additionally, specialized personnel from Enel identified an illegal connection to the public electricity grid at the site, leading to charges of aggravated theft of electricity.

The crackdown follows long-standing issues with illegal dumping in the region. Local officials have noted that rural roads and vineyards are frequently targeted by those abandoning waste, despite the use of camera traps and increased patrols. The municipality continues to face high costs for land reclamation and is working to increase rural police presence to combat the persistent environmental crisis.
