Selenica Municipality faces potential merger with Vlora
Silvana Begaj has expressed opposition to the proposed territorial reform that would merge the Selenica Municipality with Vlora. The argument against the merger emphasizes that Selenica is a vast, rural territory with specific needs, including agriculture, livestock, and mining traditions, which differ from the urban priorities of Vlora.
Concerns were raised that a merger would distance the administration from rural residents in areas such as Kota, Sevaster, and Vllina, forcing them to travel further for services. There is also a risk that Selenica could lose its local voice and decision-making weight, as investments might naturally gravitate toward the more populated coastal and urban areas. Begaj suggests that while administrative cooperation with Vlora is beneficial, it should not require the dissolution of the Selenica Municipality.
