Self-optimising catalysts boost water electrolysis efficiency
Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz have shown that self‑activating electrocatalysts can continuously improve the performance of water electrolyzers, a key technology for green hydrogen production. In a review published in *Advanced Energy Materials*, the team analysed 33 studies on the oxygen evolution reaction and 17 on the hydrogen evolution reaction, quantifying the efficiency gains and identifying the mechanisms behind the self‑optimization.
“The catalysts optimise themselves and improve over the course of operation,” said Dr Dandan Gao of JGU. The improvement stems from diffusion‑driven reorganisation of catalyst material, intermixing of water‑derived species and electrode material, and the action of salts that roughen the surface, creating more active sites. The authors outline future research directions, including standardised reporting protocols and the potential of seawater electrolysis.
The findings suggest a pathway toward scalable, cost‑effective, and sustainable hydrogen production, though practical deployment will require further development.
