Self‑tanning products face safety concerns over DHA inhalation and UV protection

Self‑tanning creams, foams and sprays rely on dihydroxyacetone (DHA) to colour the skin. While DHA creates a brown hue without UV exposure, dermatologists warn that long‑term safety data are lacking. In spray applications, fine particles can be inhaled, a risk highlighted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which has approved DHA only for external skin use, not for inhalation or contact with mucous membranes. Experts note that inhaled aerosol may irritate eyes, nose and lungs, and that there is insufficient research to confirm its safety with repeated exposure.

Self‑tanners also give users a false sense of protection; the products do not shield against ultraviolet radiation, so applying sunscreen remains essential when outdoors. Some formulations, especially those with fragrance or high alcohol content, can cause skin irritation, dryness or allergic reactions. Nonetheless, dermatologists consider self‑tanning generally safer than UV‑based tanning or sunbed visits, which are linked to skin cancer, pigment spots and premature ageing.
