Selma Blair discusses using alcohol to cope with MS symptoms

Actress Selma Blair has revealed that she previously used alcohol to manage the nerve pain and headaches associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). Speaking on ‘The Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show’, the 54-year-old explained that drinking felt like the only way to achieve a sense of calm and relief from her symptoms.

Blair, who was officially diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS in 2018, believes she may have experienced juvenile MS, noting that she experienced nerve damage as early as age seven. She described her past relationship with alcohol as a way to numb pain, but noted that increasing consumption led to depressive states.

While Blair stated she does not follow a strict ‘sober sober’ lifestyle involving AA, she has cut alcohol out of her life, concluding that it is not good medicine for her condition. She previously addressed her struggles with alcohol in her 2022 memoir, ‘Mean Baby’, and cited a 2016 incident on a plane as a turning point in her decision to stop drinking.
