Selçuk Bayraktar targets SMR development for energy independence
Selçuk Bayraktar, Chairman of Baykar, has announced a strategic vision for Turkey to develop Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) within a few years. Speaking at the Nuclear Energy Technologies Design Competition held during TEKNOFEST, Bayraktar emphasized that SMRs will serve as a cornerstone for national energy independence.
Bayraktar revealed that through TMRS Energy, his team has been focusing on SMR research and development for the past 1.5 to 2 years. He noted that while large-scale reactors are difficult to construct, the global shift toward modular technology presents a historic opportunity similar to the breakthroughs seen in the aviation industry.
He further highlighted the critical link between energy and modern technology, stating that the geometric increase in global electricity consumption is driven largely by the requirements of artificial intelligence. Without sufficient energy, advanced information processing cannot be sustained.
