Selçuklu Municipality completes first silk‑worm harvest in Konya

The Selçuklu district municipality in Konya launched a pilot silkworm (Bombyx mori) breeding project to revive a traditional production culture and diversify rural agriculture. After a testing phase, the first cocoons were harvested successfully, marking the project’s initial output.

The municipality plans to support participating farmers with a package that includes subsidised mulberry (dut) saplings, raf (rame) frames, insulated tents and free technical consultancy. Mayor Ahmet Pekyatırmacı said the initiative creates new income sources, preserves cultural heritage and strengthens rural development. The project is part of a broader set of local programmes that also cover beekeeping, barley harvest, cheese production and fertilizer distribution.

Further expansion of the silkworm programme will aim to make the activity sustainable across Selçuklu’s rural neighbourhoods, encouraging wider adoption of diversified farming practices.
