SEMA allocates funds for Chetumal coastal erosion and surveillance

The Quintana Roo Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) is deploying funds from an environmental trust to address ecological issues in Chetumal.

To combat coastal erosion at the Boulevard Bahía de Chetumal, SEMA plans to invest approximately 1.3 million pesos to rehabilitate the damaged shoreline and install a rock jetty (escollera) to buffer wave impact. The agency has requested that the federal Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) treat the project as an emergency to bypass the lengthy standard environmental impact assessment process.

Additionally, 27 million pesos will be used to modernize the Payo Obispo zoo, and approximately 8 to 9 million pesos are allocated for a new surveillance center at Laguna Chacmuchuc. The surveillance center aims to prevent illegal waste dumping and protect community guardians who monitor the area. These projects are funded by contributions and donations from local businesses to the state's environmental trust.
