Semaglutide combinations and oral form improve blood sugar and weight in new studies

Recent clinical research indicates that combining the GLP‑1 receptor agonist semaglutide with the amylin analogue cagrilintide in a once‑weekly injection significantly lowers HbA1c—by up to 1.8 percentage points—in adults with type 2 diabetes, with additional weight‑loss benefits. The large trial involving 2,713 participants showed the combo outperformed semaglutide alone, and a separate study of patients on basal insulin reported similarly strong reductions.

A nationwide real‑world analysis from Finland examined more than 7,000 adults who started oral semaglutide between 2021 and 2023. The findings demonstrated meaningful improvements in glycaemic control, body‑weight reduction, lipid profiles and liver‑enzyme levels, including among patients aged 75 and older. These results support the effectiveness of both the weekly injectable combo and oral semaglutide in routine diabetes care.
