SEMAL releases guide debunking common anti-aging and longevity myths

The Spanish Society of Anti-Aging Medicine and Longevity (SEMAL), in collaboration with the Salud sin Bulos Institute, has released a guide to debunk common myths regarding aging and longevity. The initiative follows findings that nearly one-third of social media content regarding anti-aging lacks sufficient scientific evidence, often exaggerating or oversimplifying complex biological processes.

Key findings from the guide include:

- Genetics: While a strong genetic heritage contributes between 50% and 60% to longevity, a standard genetic profile contributes only about 20%, leaving the remainder to lifestyle and environment. - Fasting and Caloric Restriction: Although caloric restriction has shown life-extending benefits in animal models, there is currently no proven evidence that intermittent fasting or specific diets extend human life. - Biological Age: Despite claims from some aesthetic clinics, there is no single 'biological ID' or test capable of determining an exact biological age. - Cognitive and Physical Decline: While aging increases risks, it does not make physical or cognitive deterioration inevitable. The guide emphasizes regular physical exercise and adequate nutrient intake to prevent muscle and bone density loss.
