Semarnat halts GL Dreams housing project in Puerto Morelos

Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has issued a resolution regarding the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) for the GL Dreams housing project in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo. The resolution did not grant authorization, effectively halting the development in its current proposed form.

The project, promoted by Terrenos y Construcciones del Puerto, S. A. de C. V., planned for the construction of 308 residential units, including single-family homes and apartments, across approximately 11.8 hectares. The development had a projected investment of 438 million pesos and was intended to include infrastructure, roads, and recreational spaces.

Environmental organizations, including Save the Waters, have actively opposed the project since 2024. Critics raised concerns regarding the potential fragmentation of habitats and significant threats to the local mangrove and wetland systems. While the resolution acts as an obstacle to the development as submitted, it does not necessarily constitute a permanent cancellation of the project.
