Semed holds training on giftedness and ADHD
The Municipal Education Secretariat (Semed) held a training session focused on high abilities, giftedness, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at the Faculdade Insted theater. The event was designed for professionals working within the Municipal Teaching Network (Reme) specializing in special education.
Neuropsychologist Israel Daige discussed the complexities of identifying giftedness, noting that there is no single test to determine superdotation. He emphasized that assessment must be a broad screening of potential across various cognitive areas—including reasoning, memory, language, and executive functions—rather than relying solely on intelligence scores. He also highlighted the importance of considering maturity and social support when discussing student acceleration.
Neuropediatrician Maria José Maldonado addressed ADHD, noting that the presence of certain symptoms alone does not constitute a disorder. She stressed that professional evaluation must consider various developmental factors and that each case requires specific technical expertise.
