SEMES advocates for dedicated emergency nursing specialty in Spain

The Spanish Society of Emergency and Urgent Medicine (SEMES) is advocating for the creation of a distinct nursing specialty for Emergency and Urgent Care. The organization opposes efforts to merge these areas with Critical Care into a single specialty, arguing that such a move would fail to reflect the specific competencies and professional requirements of emergency nursing.

SEMES warns that creating a broad, undifferentiated specialty could result in training that lacks the necessary depth for emergency settings. They cite the risk of repeating past issues where specialties failed to develop because they attempted to cover too many disparate fields. The society notes that 86 percent of its members support a dedicated specialty to ensure patient safety, professional clarity, and healthcare efficiency.

To achieve this, SEMES intends to present its proposal to the Ministry of Health and the health departments of Spain's 17 autonomous communities. The organization highlights that many other European nations, including Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, already utilize specialized emergency nursing programs or advanced practice models.
