SEMI joins EU ReSiLient consortium to secure semiconductor materials

SEMI, the industry association for semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing, has joined the EU ReSiLient project consortium. The initiative aims to reduce Europe’s dependence on imported silicon and silicon carbide (SiC) raw materials and strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem.

Co-funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe program, ReSiLient is a 48-month, €9.57 million project involving 18 partners from nine European countries. The project focuses on mapping critical dependencies and validating domestic and secondary feedstocks, such as olivine, aplite, and Si-rich industrial waste streams.

To achieve sustainable production at scale, the project will demonstrate two integrated production routes: a primary route using domestic mineral sources and a secondary route utilizing industrial by-products and waste streams through methods like hydrometallurgical leaching and hydrogen plasma refining.
