Semiconductor and tech stocks drive U.S. market gains

U.S. stock markets have seen a resurgence driven by large-cap technology and semiconductor stocks. The Nasdaq Composite reached a record high, while the S&P 500 approached its previous peak. This rally was largely concentrated in specific sectors, with gains in Meta Platforms and semiconductor companies offsetting broader market weakness in industrial and banking sectors.

Sentiment in the semiconductor industry improved following comments from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who projected that chip sales volumes would double next year. This outlook has bolstered expectations for AI infrastructure investment, directly impacting companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Despite concerns regarding the pace of AI development and rising interest rates, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has shown signs of recovery.

However, market breadth remains a concern. While major indices rose, the number of stocks hitting new lows significantly outnumbered those hitting 52-week highs. Economic pressures, including high long-term Treasury yields and oil prices remaining above $100 per barrel, continue to pose risks to overall market stability.
