Semiconductor bonuses drive 4% consumption boost in key Korean regions
A report by the Bank of Korea reveals that performance bonuses in the semiconductor sector are significantly driving consumption in specific regions. In areas with high concentrations of employees from companies like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix—including Icheon, Hwaseong, and Cheongju—monthly card spending has been up to 4% higher than in non-beneficiary regions.
The cumulative increase in consumption in these areas is estimated at 1.1 trillion won from February last year to June this year, with projections suggesting it could reach 1.7 trillion won by the end of 2024. This trend is expected to boost South Korea's real GDP growth rate by 0.06 to 0.09 percentage points next year as bonus scales increase.
However, the Bank of Korea noted that the economic impact is currently limited by the concentration of funds in luxury goods and real estate. For instance, Tesla deliveries in these regions surged by 105.6% in the first half of the year, and many residents in the Icheon area have used bonuses to purchase property in the southern Gyeonggi belt. The Bank emphasized that for a sustainable economic cycle, these additional incomes should ideally flow into services, daily consumption, and job creation rather than just asset markets.
