Semiconductor industry faces global talent shortage amid AI expansion
The global semiconductor industry is facing a critical labor shortage that threatens to bottleneck the massive expansion of AI-driven infrastructure. While capital expenditure is surging, companies across Asia and the United States are struggling to recruit sufficient engineers, technicians, and construction workers to support new capacity.
In Asia, major manufacturers in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia are seeing rapid demand increases. In Taiwan, the supply-to-demand ratio for semiconductor roles exceeds 2:1, with some construction positions seeing ratios as high as 12:1. This scarcity is driving up salaries and forcing companies like TSMC to lower educational requirements, recruiting high school graduates to fill production roles. Demographic declines in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan are further exacerbating the long-term supply issue.
In the United States, the crisis is equally acute. Analysis from McKinsey & Company and the SEMI Foundation suggests the U.S. could face a shortage of 157,000 semiconductor workers by 2030. As Samsung, Intel, and Micron ramp up production in states like Texas, Arizona, and New York, they are competing fiercely for a limited pool of talent. To mitigate immediate gaps, companies like Samsung and SK Hynix are deploying workers from South Korea to assist with U.S. plant operations while investing in local academic partnerships to build a long-term talent pipeline.
