Semiconductor industry faces talent shortages and technological shifts
The semiconductor industry is navigating a period of significant expansion and technological evolution. A critical challenge is a projected global talent shortage, with Deloitte estimating a need for over one million additional skilled workers by 2030. In the United States, the Semiconductor Industry Association anticipates a demand for 115,000 new positions by 2030, noting that approximately 67,000 roles may remain unfilled.
This workforce bottleneck is driven by the AI boom, which increases demand for specialized roles such as AI hardware engineers, semiconductor architects, and data scientists. Simultaneously, the industry is seeing a shift toward chiplet technology. Rather than relying on large, monolithic chips, manufacturers are increasingly using chiplet architectures—combining multiple specialized dies into a single package. This modular approach aims to improve manufacturing yields, power efficiency, and performance for AI accelerators and high-performance computing. The chiplet market is projected to grow from USD 51.94 billion in 2025 to USD 157.23 billion by 2030.
