Semiconductor market projected to reach $1.7 trillion by 2026

The global semiconductor market is entering a period of significant growth driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure, with projections suggesting the market could reach approximately $1.7 trillion by 2026 and exceed $2.2 trillion by 2027.

A critical driver of this expansion is the memory sector. High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) has become a vital component for AI accelerators, creating a supply squeeze that may drive up prices for both HBM and standard DRAM. As major manufacturers like Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron Technology shift capacity toward HBM, traditional memory supplies may tighten.

Beyond memory, the logic chip market is expected to grow significantly, with GPUs serving as a primary engine for demand in AI data centers. Advanced packaging technologies—such as 2.5D/3D integration, chiplets, and hybrid bonding—are also becoming strategic necessities to overcome the physical limits of traditional semiconductor miniaturization.

While the outlook is bullish, analysts warn of potential cyclical risks between 2028 and 2029. If massive capital expenditures in new fabrication and packaging capacity outpace the growth of AI demand, the industry could face a period of oversupply and price corrections.
